Livingston Taylor’s Last Alaska Moon

By Rick Garner

Livingston Taylor’s newest recording, Last Alaska Moon, is the latest addition to his storied repertoire.  Recorded at Paragon Studio in Nashville, Tennessee with some of the best musicians in the industry today ~ including Steve Gadd, Leland Sklar, Larry Carlton and Vince Gill ~ this latest collection of music completes a body of work introduced in Livingston’s previous offering, There You Are Again.

“This music represents a huge outpouring of work that came from a creative blast in 2002,” Taylor shares of the 23 fully finished and produced songs that appear between There You Are Again and Last Alaska Moon. “To start this process at 52 and see the end result today is something of which I am particularly proud.”

Arguably giving us some of the best music of his career, Taylor was committed to paying justice to his creative masterpiece by going all out with the recording and production elements.  “We went old school all the way on this one,” he said.  “This is a big, broad, lush recording with full string sessions [recorded in] New York and collaborations with some of the best musicians on the planet.  This is real record making.”

Livingston’s musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire ~ and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres ~ folk, pop, gospel, jazz ~ and with both upbeat storytelling and touching ballads.  This new collection includes the straight country of “I’m Letting the Whisky Do My Talking,” the honking bluegrass of “Henry,” over-the-top Broadway of “Answer My Prayer,” the big band sound of “Everybody’s Just Like Me,” paint-the-barn-red gospel of “Step By Step” (which appeared on There You Are Again), and an homage to Livingston’s first and truest love, Top 40 pop radio, with “Yes” and “Blame It On Me” (also from the previous album).  Last Alaska Moon also includes a duet with Livingston’s nephew Ben Taylor ~ a cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Girl Is Mine.”

Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, beginning a forty year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting, and teaching.  Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, he is the fourth in a very musical family.  Livingston recorded his first record at 18 and has continued to create well-crafted, introspective and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide.

Taylor has never stopped performing since those early coffeehouse days, and he maintains a busy concert schedule of over 80 shows each year.  He is a natural and magnetic performer, peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and a genuine warmth that connect him to his fans.  His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans are just as often treated to a classic Gershwin as a beloved tune from Broadway.

Last Alaska Moon is being distributed by Chesky Records and is available from Amazon.com, iTunes, and on the Livingston Taylor official website, www.livtaylor.com
