Get Crafty

Summer is here and winter is the furthest thing from our minds. But while November is literally months away, it’s never too early to start planning. No – we’re not talking about making that Thanksgiving Day shopping list or prepping for Black Friday. We’re talking about the Worcester Craft Center’s Festival of Crafts!

“Work must be original, hand-crafted and expertly executed,” says O’Connor. “Manufactured products, products assembled from kits and products made outside North America are all unacceptable to these [American Crafts Council] standards.”

The Festival of Crafts ties in perfectly with the WCC’s mission to sustain crafts as a vital part of the world by providing support to the craft artists, developing and supporting the market for crafts, and encouraging public appreciation of the art form.

So who can enter the festival? Anyone! As O’Connor explains, “Whether you are just starting out in a craft or have years of experience under your belt, the craft center is a place for you to grow in your creativity, skills and understanding of craft and craft making.”

But the Festival of Crafts isn’t just about viewing the beautiful pieces of work. You have the opportunity to meet and speak with the artisans at the forefront of contemporary American craft. Also, it’s the perfect place to go to spend time with your family and get in some holiday shopping at the gallery store!

The Festival of Crafts will be held at the Worcester Center for Crafts at 25 Sagamore Road in Worcester. Established in 1856 as the Worcester Employment Society, the Worcester Center for Crafts was the nation’s first community-based school for the study of contemporary craft. Since then, it has become the mecca for some of the region’s most talented artists and craftspeople and the center of learning for thousands of students.

For more information about the Worcester Center for Crafts, call 508.753.8183 or visit www.worcestercraftcenter.org. Entry forms for the Thanksgiving Day weekend festival also can be found on the Worcester Craft Center’s website. Forms must be postmarked by June 28th.
