Adding fall flavors to oatmeal

From cranberries and apples to pears and pecans, adding fresh, fall flavors to a bowl of hot oatmeal can be the perfect way to start off a chilly morning. Not only are oats a good source of protein and an excellent source of fiber, but they’re a blank canvas for getting creative with seasonal recipes. Here are a few ways to enjoy the comforting flavors of fall:

1. Celebrate the season of pumpkin spice by mixing some pumpkin puree into your oatmeal with a few dashes of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

2. For a delicious and warming, apple-pie inspired breakfast, combine chopped walnuts with cooked apples and cinnamon.

3. Mix in tangy dried cranberries, pecans and a splash of vanilla extract for a tart and crunchy breakfast bowl.

4. Add crushed pistachios, caramelized pears and a drizzle of maple syrup for a decadent, yet healthy, way to kick-start the day.

When experimenting with oatmeal recipes, choose high-quality oats as a base for all of your delicious mix-ins. Bakery On Main offers a full line of 24-ounce bagged oats, called Happy Oats, available in several varieties, including Happy Rolled Oats, Happy Quick Oats and Happy Steelcut Oats.

Not sure which to try first? If you have more time to spend in the kitchen, then steel-cut oats may be for you. They take about 12-20 minutes to cook, as they are the oat kernel simply cut into smaller pieces. For a faster option, try the rolled oats. Rolled oats are what you get after the oat kernel has been steamed and flattened, so they only take about 3-6 minutes to cook. For an instant, easy-to-make breakfast, quick oats are ready as soon as boiling water is added to them. Quick oats are ready the fastest because the oat kernel is steamed much longer than the rolled oats and is flattened into thinner flakes.

Whichever type of oats you prefer or toppings you choose, enjoy and let every bite bring you happiness!
