“Go” Around the World with the PIMSLEUR®

Language Learning Programs
By Dave Smith

Simon and Schuster’s Pimsleur is proud to announce the launch of its “go” series; the new brand is a contemporary approach to the most effective language learning programs, created to meet the unique and growing needs of savvy consumers in a challenging marketplace. The new series launches with 6 languages and is committed to making goPimsleur the most consumer-friendly language program available. It is as easy as 1, 2, 3 ~ Hear It, Read It, Speak It!

Pimsleur’s courses have always been at the forefront of foreign language instruction; now, users of their introductory programs will also learn to read in their chosen language(s). The new series includes eight 30 minute language lessons and accompanying reading material on mp3 ready audio files. Users can listen and learn at their convenience, at home or on the go, at whatever pace works best for them.  The reading material will also be available as a printed booklet in each “go” series package. Over the course of each go program, Pimsleur users will develop a broad repertoire of words, phrases and sentence structures to choose from and will soon begin thinking, speaking, and reading in their newly acquired language! The series launched in August 2009 with goSpanish™ goFrench™, goItalian™, goGerman™, goPortuguese™ and goRussian™.

Says Chris Lynch, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster Audio, “We are dedicated to making this new series the most consumer friendly language learning program. The modern approach to language learning combines the traditional methods of Pimsleur, while meeting the needs of today’s consumer. We see this as an opportunity to create a unique footprint in the changing marketplace. It is an initiative geared to make language learning easy, affordable, and technology-friendly.”

The new go series subscribes to the key traditional elements of the Pimsleur Method and includes the following:

·        Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation

·         Interactive audio instruction that teaches spoken language organically

·         The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere without textbooks, written exercises, or drills

·         30-minute lessons designed to optimize how much language can be learned in one sitting

Dr. Paul Pimsleur (d. 1976) devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. He was fluent in French, good in German, and had a working knowledge of Italian, Russian, Modern Greek, and Mandarin Chinese. After obtaining his Ph.D. in French and a Masters in Psychology from Columbia University, he taught French Phonetics and Linguistics at UCLA. He later became Professor of Romance Languages and Language Education, and Director of The Listening Center (a state-wide language lab) at Ohio State University; Professor of Education and Romance Languages at the State University of New York at Albany; and a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Heidelberg. He did research on the psychology of language learning and in 1969 was Section Head of Psychology of Second Language Learning at the International Congress of Applied Linguistics.

Dr. Pimsleur was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), American Educational Research Association (AERA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and a founding member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

His many books and articles revolutionized theories of language learning and teaching. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed a new method (The Pimsleur Method) that is based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called “Graduated Interval Recall.” This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the “Pimsleur Programs.”
